My experiences in Ukraine – a presentation

A young photojournalist from Wels, Austria shares his story

For four years, Ukraine has been in the headlines daily - but what is life really like on the ground? What does it mean for millions of children and young people to grow up in the middle of a war, often without electricity, water, or safety?

My name is Andreas Stroh. I am 22 years old and originally from Upper Austria where I attended school for twelve years, graduating three years ago. After completing a multimedia degree with honors, I now work as a photojournalist in Austria and Germany, as well as in Ukraine.

During my many trips to Ukraine, I’ve experienced life near the frontlines and daily life seemingly far from the war zone. But as distant as the war may seem, suddenly it’s right in front of you.

Impressions from my presentation

Using photos and videos from everyday life in Ukraine, I share impressions from the war-torn Ukraine that are often under-represented in the media.

An air raid alert on a phone, a plush toy in the shape of a missile, or streets trembling from diesel generators - these are all realities of war. But there’s also relaxed kayaking in summer or partying - though only until 11 p.m., as a curfew is in effect at night.

A talk for schools

Given that platforms like TikTok and similar social media often lead to many misunderstandings about the war in Ukraine, giving talks in schools is a special priority for me.

My connection to the challenges and perspectives of young people helps me engage with students on a unique level and address their questions.
